Koive

The moment when birch leaves sway in the wind, shimmering as if dancing in the light—
Koive was born from weaving that rhythm of nature into space.

During his residency at HIAP in Finland, Nishi became fascinated by the use of natural light in Finnish architecture and was inspired by the subtle movement of birch branches and leaves. Rather than mimicking their motion, he sought to capture those moments as continuous layers—like frames of a film—accumulating the memory of light and wind.

The structure employs perforated steel straps, whose preexisting holes guide the bending process. The form emerges from the balance between tension and curvature, allowing natural motion to become the structural principle of the space. The low Finnish sunlight introduces delicate shifts in reflection, causing the space to change as if breathing with time.

Rooted in the philosophy of Phenomenal Architecture, Koive translates the rhythm of nature into spatial form through structure. A poetic order woven by tension and light quietly unfolds within the space.
