Where there is light, there must also be shadow. Boundary of Light and Shadow reconsiders the coexistence of brightness and darkness within space.
Created in response to a lighting design competition themed “Illuminating the Darkness,” Nishi designed a composition in which a strong beam of light is directed in one direction, embracing the resulting shadow as a symbolic “presence of darkness.” By allowing light and shadow to exist simultaneously, the work invites viewers to perceive not only brightness but also the depth of darkness.
The title refers to the threshold between light and shadow, inspired by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows. Nishi was drawn to the idea that darkness accentuates beauty and evokes imagination within space.
Reconstructing the lighting device as an architectural element, Boundary of Light and Shadow redefines the poetic relationship between light and darkness. It quietly restores the aesthetics of shadow that modern society tends to forget, offering a contemplative space of luminous and sensory balance.
