Waves glimmering in light—Moved by the sight of the Mediterranean Sea, Nishi sought to translate that motion into space.
Choppy Sight was created during his stay in Malta, inspired by the ever-changing expressions of ripples and reflections on the sea. Gentle waves return soft reflections, while rough waves produce sharp brilliance. Nishi incorporated these variations into the structure of the shoji—a traditional Japanese sliding screen—manipulating reflection angles to control the play of light. As viewers move, light flickers and the entire space sways like the surface of water.
Differences in reflectivity between vertical and horizontal components generate a rhythmic, checkered pattern reminiscent of the repetitive motion of waves and the underlying order of nature.
Designed as an architectural device that bridges natural phenomena and human movement, Choppy Sight brings wavering luminosity and poetic depth to space through subtle reflections of light.
