Ripple

2020

Light / Wind / Refraction

Ripple is an architectural work that operates through natural conditions of light and air. A structure penetrating the ceiling refracts incoming daylight, projecting shifting light patterns onto the floor over time. Acrylic pipes and triangular glass prisms are used as structural elements, forming an interdependent system that sustains the work as a whole.

Movement is not mechanically controlled; instead, it emerges in response to environmental factors such as prevailing air currents at the site and the position of the sun. During the production process, wind direction and solar altitude at the installation site were measured, and the optical properties of the materials were examined. No motors or mechanical devices are employed. The same state never recurs, and the space continuously presents different appearances. Through the presence of ordinary sunlight and wind, Ripple generates a distinct environmental phenomenon within the space.

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

Shimmering reflections
Spatial rhythms synchronized with outdoor air
Light patterns that never repeat

Ripple begins with an observation of an order that briefly appears and disappears when a raindrop touches the surface of water. Although the form itself does not remain, the structure underlying that moment persists in memory. The work does not aim to fix such fleeting order. Instead, it seeks to keep the space in an indeterminate state, remaining continuously open to change. Movement is not imposed or directed, but received from the surrounding environment. Ripple intends to sustain a condition in which space is repeatedly reconfigured through natural forces, allowing change itself to remain present.
