moor the sky

2021

Tide / Reflection / Horizon

Along the coast of Naoetsu in Niigata, the horizon shifts continuously with the movement of tide, wind, and sunset. Moor the sky responds to these rhythms by creating a field of vessels that receive seawater and light. The installation consists of a series of shallow containers arranged across the shoreline. At high tide, the vessels fill with seawater; at low tide, they remain as reflective pools. The water surfaces mirror the sky and surrounding landscape, forming geometric patterns that tremble with wind and the passing of clouds.

The shape of the work is not fixed. Instead, it changes according to tidal level, sunlight, and weather conditions. The site functions as a structure that receives natural phenomena rather than controlling them. Local residents participated in cleaning the beach and installing the work, allowing the project to emerge from the daily life of the coastline. Through the slow movement of water and light, moor the sky reconnects the rhythms of landscape and human presence.

Connection between body and site

The project begins with the movement of the tide and the changing colors of the sunset along the coast of Naoetsu. A field of shallow vessels is placed across the shoreline. As the tide rises, they gradually fill with seawater; when the tide retreats, they remain as quiet pools reflecting the sky. Wind, clouds, and light disturb the water surface, creating constantly shifting geometric reflections. Rather than fixing a permanent form, the installation functions as a framework that receives natural motion. Tide level and sunlight continuously reshape the appearance of the site. The work was installed with the participation of local residents who helped clean the beach and assemble the structure. In this way, the project grows from the daily activity of the place. Through the mediation of water and light, moor the sky becomes a landscape where natural rhythms and human presence quietly intersect.
