Koive
2023
Light / Tension / Reflection
Koive is a structural installation composed of perforated steel straps. Developed during a residency in Finland, the work does not begin with a predetermined outline; instead, the structure emerges through the physical behavior of the material itself. Existing perforations in the steel straps guide the direction of bending and generate a continuous three-dimensional pattern. Through the interaction of tension, gravity, and flexure, the material determines its own configuration. The final form is not fixed by the designer, but arises from these interrelated forces. Connections between the steel straps are achieved by twisting and locking their forms together without additional fasteners.
While the structure remains largely static, it exhibits spring-like movement when exposed to wind. When sunlight strikes the metal surface, delicate reflections appear. As the angle of light changes, reflections and shadows slowly shift, introducing subtle variations into the surrounding space.

The title Koive derives from the Finnish word for birch. Under the low northern sun, birch leaves trembling in the wind produce distinctive patterns of light and shadow. The work does not attempt to directly reproduce the movement of these leaves. Instead, it understands motion as a sequence of continuous scenes, and translates their succession into space, like frames of a film. The structure extends in a tree-like manner—linking root, trunk, branch, and leaf—and grows fractally through space. By entrusting the final form to the behavior of the material itself, shapes emerge that are specific to the conditions of the site in which the work is installed.
