Light / Tension / Reflection
Birch leaves trembling in the northern wind leave fleeting patterns of light and shadow on the ground. Koive translates this subtle rhythm into spatial structure. Developed during a residency in Finland, the work focuses not on reproducing the movement of leaves but on spatializing the interval created by their oscillation. The structure is composed of perforated steel straps whose existing holes guide the direction of bending. Through the interaction of tension and flexure, the material determines its own configuration. Rather than imposing a predetermined contour, the designer allows the inherent behavior of the material to generate the form. When sunlight strikes the metal surface, delicate reflections appear and drift slowly with the changing angle of the sun.
Although the structure remains physically static, the interplay of light and shadow introduces a quiet sense of motion, making the surrounding space seem to breathe.

Intervals of light and shadow
Koive takes its name from the Finnish word for birch. During the residency, the trembling leaves of birch trees under the low northern sun produced shifting patterns of light and shadow. The project does not attempt to imitate that movement directly. Instead, it seeks to translate the temporal interval created by the trembling into a spatial condition. Perforated steel straps respond to tension and gravity, allowing the material’s inherent properties to determine the shape of the structure. As sunlight interacts with the metallic surface, reflections drift gradually across the surrounding space. The installation becomes a field where material behavior and natural light intersect. In this environment, space appears less as a fixed object and more as a phenomenon that emerges from the interaction of structure, light, and time.
