Inspired by the reflection of city lights on the surface of Shinobazu Pond, this large-scale light installation captures the quiet dialogue between the urban landscape and water.
The carefully modulated blue light accentuates the ripples and traces luminous lines across the pond’s surface. Floating structures composed of light and shadow evoke the aesthetics of a Japanese garden, while the subtle motion of light—shifting with time and weather—connects the real and the reflected worlds. The pond becomes a site where urban tranquility takes on a poetic form.
Created within the context of laboratory-based production, the work marked the founding project of the Spatial Production Laboratory, directed by Professor Taro Suzuki with Nishi as project leader. Through the integration of digital light control and phenomenological expression, artificial illumination begins to breathe like a natural phenomenon.
By reinterpreting the boundary between city and nature, the installation invites viewers into a contemplative, poetic experience of light and space.
