Läsnäolo

2025

Water / Resonance / Reflection

Läsnäolo is an installation situated in the tunnels of an abandoned mine, responding to seasonal change. During summer, meltwater continually drips from the rock surfaces within the tunnel, and the work is structured as a direct response to this natural phenomenon. Reused aluminum mechanisms are suspended throughout the tunnel. When droplets strike these elements, subtle vibrations travel through the structure and generate continuous movement. Each drop is a minor event, yet through accumulation they form a field of motion that is constantly in flux.

Within the tunnel environment, humidity, reflections, and acoustics emerge in a distinctive manner. The installation operates solely through the interaction between water and metal materials. As a result, multiple temporalities appear simultaneously: the industrial time inscribed in the mine’s past and the cyclical time repeated by meltwater.

The title Läsnäolo means “presence” in Finnish. The work begins with attention to a rhythm that is rarely noticed: the continuous dripping of water in an abandoned mine tunnel. This dripping persists quietly, independent of past industrial activity. What the work focuses on is the overlap of different temporalities within a space that is neither inside nor outside. One is the time of structure that remains after human use has ceased; the other is the cyclical time continuously marked by underground water. Although they exist in the same place, these temporalities proceed according to different speeds and logics.
