For a lighting competition with the theme of "illuminating darkness," Takatoku conceived a work that explores the coexistence of light and shadow within a single space. The concept involves directing a strong light in one direction while using the shadow that appears on the opposite side as a representation of darkness. This approach results in a lighting fixture where light and darkness can exist simultaneously in the same environment. The work, titled Liminal, signifies the boundary between light and shadow, and seeks to bring the often distant and forgotten allure of darkness closer to everyday experience. This concept was further influenced by his research into the history of light and darkness, leading him to question why darkness has been increasingly eradicated in modern times, and whether there is still a need for this element, often associated with fear and uncertainty. Inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, Takatoku realized that darkness has long played a crucial role in accentuating the beauty of spaces and objects, while also sparking human imagination. Through Liminal, he invites viewers to once again appreciate the subtle charm of darkness and to reconsider its essential place in contemporary life.
